Formatting your hard drive prepares it to have data stored on it. Usually when you install any of the Windows flavors on a brand new hard drive, it does the format as par of the installation.

the file system you picked is also part of the installation. If you still like to format your drive you could do it from the OS while it is still running, however, you would erase all sign of data.

Make sure you backup your more inportant files. I bought a software call wipedrive. This will get rid of all your problems. Most of the time you format the old fashion way, you'll still problem on that hard drive. Wipedrive will correct that.

Often times your hard drive will come with a disk management software which helps you format. It offers very fast formatting, partitioning or low level formatting as well.

If you don't have the software you could easily find some 3rd party programs with a google search.
