If I were to put tile on my floor, do I need to add anything underneath it?

Well, there is of course thinset, which is the adhesive. And I've been told that you need to put a leveler on your floor if you have more than a 3/16 inch variance, but I've tiled my a floor with a 3/4th inch variance. I just have to have 3 legged tables instead of 4 legged tables.

That's a good start to the question. There is something else I had in mind as well.
