Something that most people never think about; turn the ignition key OFF.

You will quickly and safely coast to a stop.

Not necessarily. If you kill the engine, you lose power brakes, power steering, and your steering wheel may lock.

It depends on what's ahead. On a crowded street I'd stand on the foot brake and pull the emergency brake, On a highway I'd try the footbrake but maybe not the emergency brake right away because of the high speed cars behind me. Either way I'd look for a place to ditch the car. Good thing I always use a seat belt! I sure hope this never happens to me or anyone!

Tap the brakes - turn off the engine? Reach down and pull it back up? Take your vehicle in to Toyota for new parts...

Pray. Scream. Cry.

No, seriously, you should put the car in neutral and step on the brakes hard with both feet.

And then pray.

I just heard this the other day on the radio because of the Toyota ordeal and some of their cars having this happen to them. He said to put your car in neutral and get to the side of the road as safely as you can and brake slowly. And then maybe turn the engine off. Hope this helps! I would suggest not to panic but take one step at a time.

Switch your gear to "N" and start changing lanes to the side and stop. Once you stop then turn off the engine. Keep aware of cars around you as you do this.

» Answer from Duncan Wherrett Answer given 2 years 96 days ago.
Change into neutral. Put the brakes on. Do not turn the engine off until you have safely parked the car. If you turn the engine off while you are still moving, hydraulics can stop working, so the brakes and power steering will also not function properly.
