Is the recall appropriate or is public panic out of proportion to the issue?
Answers to this question:I hear Toyota has asked to borrow Steve Wozniak's Prius for a week. I guess it pays to be on Dancing with the Stars.
Yes, I think so too.. There were times that these happened already, and they responded well. This is just on the bigger scale.
Other car manufacturers never did what Toyota has been doing now. Recalling it was a big decision. There was a time when a car manufacturer just extended or added a warranty due to a defect.
The recall is appropriate but should have been done sooner. The news started trickling in several months before the recall but Toyota denied it until now. They should have looked into it in more depth and came up with the remedy to the situation and responded to the community quickly.
There is an article in the latest Car and Driver that everyone who wants to attack Toyota for this should read. It shows that, even with the throttle wide open, the brakes will still stop the car and, in most cases, including a high horsepower Camry, deceleration to zero doesn't even take much longer. In fact, that same Camry actually stopped faster than a Taurus without the throttle engaged.
Add to that the fact that there is nothing stopping people from shifting the car into neutral, or even killing the ignition, and I really have to wonder if this isn't just natural selection in action.
All of that being said, there have been reports of weird issues with drive by wire systems (which basically replaces the throttle cable with electronics), but not just Toyota. Some manufacturers have opted to make it so that the accelerator is cut off when the brake is applied, but that's been known to cause errors where the accelerator wouldn't work at all.
If I had the money, right here and now, I would buy a brand new Toyota (or maybe one that was a few years old). Why? Because when the sheep run scared because someone cried wolf, they leave some prime grazing ground.
Good points, Anthony. My husband has been asking the same questions... Why don't people brake, turn the key off or pop the car into neutral.
He's also saying he wants to wait a few months and buy a Toyota! Great minds thinking alike here it seems.
This is a nice one. Even I will still buy a Toyota if I had the money now.
Not sure generally but went in yesterday and ours are not on the list.
» Answer from Bob Mcalister Answer given 2 years 112 days ago.Guessing that since I am a senior citizen ( by the current definition) I ASSume that people capable of driving an automobile should be capable of applying the brakes. If the brakes dont work , then the emergency brake. if that doesnt work , take it out of gear and coast to a stop .
Toyota handled this dreadfully . First day they should have said go to the local auto parts store, get new floor mats or whatever. Sign the receipt and walk . If there are additional problems, they should have notices on the website.
shame you have to tell people not to kill themselves driving without brakes, but this country seems to be full of idiots now a days.
My guess is that there is no actual problem, and everything they have said thus far has just been trying to calm people down. Did you see what the actual fix is for the gas pedal? A bar that provides less friction when the pedal swivels on it...

The public panic is crazy for this. It is not necessary.
I believe they (Toyota) are taking appropriate measures to resolve this as quickly as possible.

There is a difference between responding appropriately and being seen to respond appropriately.
We will not know if Toyota has responded appropriately until all this has washed out and we know for a fact that Toyota has solved the problem.
Rightly or wrongly, there is a perception that Toyota has been slow to respond. In the Branding World, perception is what creates Brand.
I really hope Toyota have got it right, because up until now, their track record has been amazing and they have been building virtually bulletproof cars.
Very well said. It is an unfortunate fact that perception is a person's reality.
no

I own a Toyota and am really disappointed with the quality of their vehicles lately. I had an 86 four-runner and that thing had almost 300K miles on it when it died. I bought a 2002 Tacoma TRD and I have already had problems with it and I just barely cracked the 100K mark. I've had to replace my transmission. Not too happy with Toyota right now.
