Why did cotton pickers have to wait until the sun had been up at least another to begin picking, especially on cool fall mornings?

So the sun got rid of any dampness or frost?
That's right, Ben. The dampness made the cotton weigh more but once it dryed out and the trailer got to the gin, it weighed less. So the farmer would be paying the pickers for more than they were actually picking.
