Why are the buttons on a man's shirt opposite the buttons on a ladies'?

because in the old days men would button up their own shirts but women would be buttoned up by their maids, and it is easier (for right handed maids) to have the buttons the opposite way.

It's to let us men know that we are wearing our wifes shirt and not ours.

So that you can tell which is for guys and girls. They don't use this idea over in Europe always.

You know, that's a great question. I can honestly say I don't know why our buttonholes should open to the left or to the right. It doesn't even have anything to do with lefthanded versus righthanded. Chances are it's one of those fashion rules that were established for men and women ages ago. To me, I love to wear men's oversize shirts at times and the way they button makes absolutely no difference to me.

Women used to be required to dress men so the buttons are reversed to have made it easier for them.
