Why do we dress up before an event?

It gives you the opportunity to spruce up and maybe make an impression depending on the event. What woman after running round after kids all day, doing dinners, the washing, cooking, ironing and cleaning with their pinny on and dressed in old togs, throw away the chance of a good excuse to get their hair done and look good.
Women dress up more than men do...... that's to compete with each other, who's got a better dress... :)

Mostly because people are very self-concious about their appearance--especially in public or at special occasions. If you are in the 'lime-light', you would naturally want to put your best foot forward. Right?
