Answers to this question:
Healthcare, yes. Education, ok. But the problem with the government is that it's . . . well, the government. Best to privitize. Even education, actually. There is so much that is missing in education that "reform" in any form (at least according to what most mean by reform) isn't even being addressed. 90% of what is needed in life goes way beyond the three Rs.
I think it is part of paying taxes. The point of paying taxes is (in theory) to benifit the people and improve our lives as a population. So yes.
Yes. Keep in mind that it helps US (you and me). Lest we forget, we are the GOVERNMENT...and we are our Brothers' Keepers.
Yes to both. The government needs to provide at least a good basic level of healthcare and education for all. This benefits society (and therefore you, me and everyone else). It also promotes fairness, as it means everyone has opportunities to make something of their lives, regardless of their background / family wealth.
Anything the government tries to run turns to poo. The "leaders" need to get the government in the black before trying anythng else.

There are a few things that only the government can possibly do for the people, and I think managing health care and education so that it they are available for all people are two of those things.
I also think saying that everything the government does is bad is a terribly short-sighted statement and an insult to our armed services and police, and many other public servants. (Sorry Ken.)
Bruce, the police and armed services are tools of the government, not the government. The political environment is not condusive to positive, efficient change.
I would never say anything to insult our police or military.
