'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis', with 45 letters, is widely acknowledged as the longest word in the English Language. It has appeared in a number of major English Language Dictionaries including Webster's Third New International Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Seventh Edition. It first appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1936.

Its definition is an alleged lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust found in volcanoes. It was originally coined to serve as the longest English word. However, the more general and widely used term for this condition is 'pneumoconiosis'.

The longest word in English is SMILES because there is a MILE between the first letter and the last (even if you write it in tiny writing) :)

I agree with Ben. Although Pneumonoultramicrospicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the word, I believe the word SMILES is the longest.
