Is a trilogy limited to only 3 books?

No, it isn't limited to three books. It could be 3 movies for example.

There have been two authors fairly notorious for writing trilogies of more than three books. Douglas Adams had five books in the Hitchhiker's trilogy and was working on a sixth when he passed away. Piers Anthony has...well I'm not sure how many but a lot more than three, in the Xanth trilogy. Still technically trilogy means three I believe. Of course as Ben pointed out, it doesn't actually have to be books either.
