G-string underwear was designed by numerous people, it's hard to get an exact date on a piece of clothing so intimate, but Lili St. Cyr (referred to in song by The Rocky Horror Picture Show), for one, has been credited. She was a stripper/burlesque queen who later went into designing sexy clothes for all women. In the theatre, including movies and television, costumes for women have ALWAYS been skimpy, not comfy, compared to the guys. To keep this sexy look, you can't be wearing granny panties or have any panty lines, thus, the G-string was invented. For showgirls this was decorated, it was worn on the OUTSIDE of costumes for extra eye candy -- same as guys used to wear a cod-piece. Specifically, a cinched up G-string would keep stockings/tights in place while dancing, high kicks and generally strutting your stuff. I'm not sure how they ended up today as a permanent wedgie but fashion does not follow logic.
