Why do we as humans lose our sense of taste when we get older?

I find when older people cook their use of spices not quite up to par!
Answers to this question:Probably from drinking or eating hot stuff and numbing those taste buds...or from smoking cigarettes. I have no idea :)

By up to par, do you mean that they don't use enough of them? Because, wouldn't that mean that they can still taste things quite well? Maybe even better than you can? I seem to be in a contentious mood today. :) Or did you mean that they use spices inappropriately? Because, really, that's only a matter of preference.
Generally speaking, or so I've been told, older people tend to develop breathing problems and since so much of our enjoyment of the taste of our food is in our sense of smell, I'd say that is a good reason. Ever tried closing your eyes while pinching your nose closed and taking a bite of something handed to you so that you do not know what it is? If you haven't tried that, give it a whirl sometime.
