The word Christian is used so often and it makes me wonder if we have diluted it somewhat as we have the word "love" for instance: I LOVE peach harvest yogurt.
Answers to this question:A Christian is one who echoes Christ's message of love and tolerance.
Most who call themselves this title, believe in the death penalty, tote and use guns, and hate many others including homosexuals, Jews and Muslims.
As Ghandi said,"I very much like your Christ, but I do not at all like your Christians"
A Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Christ. There are different types of Christians based on how they interpret the teachings of Christ: Baptists, Methodists and the like. As for how I came up with that answer, that would take a much longer explanation having to do with how I was raised, what I've learned for myself, how I see certain basic things about the world and how I process words at their most basic level. It would probably be boring. :)
Growing up, I heard that Christ-ian literally meant Christ-like. The problem with this definition is that by using it, I don't think I've ever met any true Christians. I certainly wouldn't fit this definition.
If we want there to be true Christians in the world, then I guess we'll have to water the term down somewhat.
To me a Christian is someone who believes in the Bible, the word of Jezus and God as a person who created the world in 6 days. Most Christians are creationists, real Christians I must add.
They believe, the world and everything else was created in 6 days by the man we know as God! First of all, Christianity and also Judaism and Islam are all monotheistic believes, meaning they believe in God as a person, who lives in the sky and we here on earth. He is high above us, we are beneath him. He's always looking down upon us and watching over our shoulder to see if we do the right thing and in the meantime there's a whole lot of misery and bad things going on in our surroundings. I'm also convinced the new testament was rewritten by some, to maintain control over the public and gain power. I think there's a lot more truth in the old testament then there is in the new one.
The old testament comes forth from ancient Egypte, who got their believes from ancient Greece and they got theirs from one of the oldest cultures known to us as Babylonia. A few hundred years B.C there was the Roman Empire and the Romans took over the believe of the Egyptians (which for a while got monotheistic under the rulership of the pharaoh Akhenaten) and from the religion of ancient Rome comes forth, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, which most of us still live by.
On the other hand, if we go back a few thousand years, let's say for instance 4000 years, people believed something very different. They didn't believe in God as a person and they were anything but monotheistic. They were more polytheistic and they believed in multiple gods, the laws of nature, living in harmony with their surroundings and environment and they believed there was a need for the right balance to it all. Examples of this kind of thinking are, Animism, Shamanism, Pantheism, Hinduism, paganism, panentheism, taoism and so on....
Don't get me wrong, I too was raised as a Christian and I really do believe Jezus was real and a very smart and loving person, but a long the way, well to me It just didn't seem to fit the picture.
Kind regards and best wishes to all.
Christian was a name given to mock followers of Jesus originally. Today it's used by many as a badge of honor, although most all who claim to be a Christian fall way short of the life of Jesus. The Christian religions and leaders today don't disciple the people in the truth of Jesus Christ and have caused most "non-Christians" to once again mock Christians, but rightly so.
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
