Copuld you buy lions @ department stores in the past?

Goodness! I haven't seen a real pet store in so long, I've forgotten what they look like. Petsmart only carries birds, rodents and lizards for the most part. You can adopt a cat from the Humane Society's space inside the store. And they hold dog adoptions in the parking lot a couple of times a year. But lions ... no I don't think so ... and in a department store? Wow, that something I've never heard of.
