What's your best homespun medical cure?

Fever is essential to combat infection.

Actually, 102 degrees is essential to kick viruses and bacterial infection's asses, but people are so fearful of fever that they take aspiriin or Tylenol to lower their body temperatures and the infection lingers forever, within normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees F.

Since white blood cells, our defense, are drastically reduced in count by sugar intake( our diets are replete with sweeteners), one can "fool" the body into 'thinking' its had a fever; one takes a very warm bath followed by a very cool shower.

The body, fooled, surmises that its had a fever and a chill and thus produces three times the white blood cells needed to kill germs.

One feels sleepy and the cold or virus is gone the next day!

Hey! Maybe that's why I haven't been sick very often ever since I started having hot flashes. :)

I don't know if it's a homespun remedy, but after a recent fall off of a horse and having to ride in a show two days after, I tried arnica. A friend had recommended it for years. I took the tablets (homeopathic) and also bought the gel and applied it topically. I was amazed. Not only did it help with the swelling and helped to clear up the bruises really quickly, it also helped to alleviate a lot of the pain. I can't take most analgesics, so this was really a welcome development. I was able to ride in the show.

Another thing I like is kaolin clay powder for relieving diarrhea. I put it into gelatin capsules and take a couple when I'm having a little trouble. The clay helps to slow things down a bit. It's part of what was once in Kaopectate (the other part was pectin), but has been replace by chemicals. I'll do things as naturally as possible whenever I can.

I also successfully counter hot flashes, from ebbing hormones, by going horseback riding, but eating clay mudpies as a loose stools cure, is a new one on me.

I've always been interested in medical information- I've never heard of this way of fooling the body- I did read something about the white blood cell thing tho- this sounds like a really smart self-help idea, that doctors won't tell you about- Thanks Paul- I'll file this away in my bank- I like vitamin E- use it for all kinds of things- It's known for protecting brain cells....

Doctors HAVE to make their rounds, and cannot afford to be home, sick, and do surely use this technique to put them back on their feet.

It IS, indeed, really smart, but no doctors will ever tell their patients this neat and simple trick.

When you DO have a fever, do not panic; avoid medicines that lower your temperature.

Allow a 102 degree fever to linger, as a defense and that fever and chill will 'burn away' infectious germs.

However, since most of us have truly sluggish immune systems, white blood cells production, our defending armies, can be triggered, with this easy technique.

The thought of a fever scares me to death because I seldom come down with one but this year I had one due to a common flu and cough caused by the changes of weather.

I drink 10 glasses of honey-rock-sugar and lemon (warm water) .

The best homespun medical cure? For sinus problems, especially during Spring when things are blooming, and Autumn, when things are falling, have a tablespoon full of honey every day that was produced in your area. This is not a cure . . . but . . . honey is made from pollen and assimilating it into your system makes you less aggravated. It has to be a spoonful every day, no exceptions -- it can be on toast, in tea, or all alone. The sticking point is that it HAS to be honey made in your area. If you live in Cleveland and it's made in New Jersey, it won't help you. Same if it's made in Missouri and you live in Texas. Local Farmer's Markets usually carry honey made near by, sometimes health stores carry it. Read the label. Check the manufacturer, not the packaging and distribution. Again, this is not a cure, there isn't one, but it will help you breathe and swallow easier.
