We are human animals ... Homo sapiens. Dogs are canine animals. Cats are feline animals.

Are you asking how we differ from the other animals maybe? I've always accepted that humans are animals, but you asked your question with an "if" seeming to say that you do not readily accept that it is so. My truth doesn't need to be your truth ... I'm just curious. Here's my question: If we aren't animals, then what are we?

I define animal as a living creature that eats, breaths, eliminates waste and procreates. It has needs and desires and works to fulfill them in whatever way possible. An animal moves away from pain and displeasure and toward the things it finds to be good.

In this way we are all alike right down to the amoeba. I do not think it is a bad thing to be an animal.

Dianne, thanks for answering this and I actually asked if we humans are considered animals then what kind of animals are we being categorized asides from the 4-legged animals.

If we aren't animals then one word can define what we are, that's humans (animals)

We are Social Animals. We are human animals.

Hilda, I do actually refer to us humans as "two-leggeds" from time to time in order to distinguish us from the four-leggeds. But that leaves out the winged and finned and legless. :)

This is an interesting question.

Haha. Dianne. You love jokes as much as I do. Now, I am getting quite confused by the winged and finned and legless or headless creatures......

Mammals. Sentient, cognizant mammals.

Without consulting my dictionary, I think that sentient basically means self-aware and it's my belief that humans are not the only animals that are self-aware. I'm still not sure what Hilda was looking for with her question, but if we were to try to come up with a definition for human animal that was specific only to us, we might have to look at things like able to prevaricate, and willing to kill other than for sustenance. I don't necessarily exalt the other animals, but they do sometimes seem more noble. I've probably said too much. :)

sentient actually insinuates consciousness. I suppose mammals with a spiritual aspect is more what I meant. I have difficulty seeing most other animals as conscious in the way I experience my spiritual side.

Nice, Jack. I love mammals = milky, sensible mammalians.

Oh, I get it. Yes, spirituality is a whole different issue.

The only difference between other animals is we humans have a spiritual consciousness whereas animals have only their senses.....

The way some "humans" behave these days, I'm thinking some mammals have more inane senses

Most animals as well as human animals, have spirits, but rather than remain intact and sacrosanct, as we do, many animal spirits, like cats and dogs, after physical death, rejoin a communal spirit cluster.

The question is not what kind of animals we are, its what kind of beings we are.

We are not animals, we are spiritual beings

I think that the animal kingdom-birds-insects -plants and every other living thing on earth, is the bottom-line basis of humanity- which is probably far older than we can imagine- provocative question Hilda..
