» Answer from David Lopez Answer given 213 days 2 hours ago.Yes, when when I was serving in South Korea in 1976.
Korea and Japan had a long adversarial history that continued into the 20th century. Every fifty years or so, Japan would invade their neighbors across the Sea of Japan. These were often more for raiding purposes than occupations. Japan, lacking sufficient forests to build with, would cut down their neighbors' trees and ship them home. As a result, much of Korea was rendered stark with bare valleys and hillsides.
To reforest their land, the Koreans would all partake in their country's Arbor Day. Schools and plants would suspend activities. School children and adults were given little tree sprouts or saplings to plant and were assigned locations to work. It was all very organized and fascinating to observe and take part in. I assume they still engage in this yearly ritual to this day.
