Sydney I am not going to refer but write from the heart and I hope it will add some two cents of worth: The Japanese had waged war and fought hard since 1931 to keep control of China from France and Germany. They coveted the natural resources of other countries as well, so they wanted to keep these countries under their control just like China and Thailand. This was out of necessity because Japan in itself is barren of natural resources.
Japan's biggest problem and constant worry was the United States of America. They knew very well that America was not going to sit idle over Japan's excursions. So somehow they have to deal with America, and they went far toward doing that when in December 7, 1941 they took America by surprise by attacking Hawaii and the Philippines destroying much of the US Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor.
Within 6 months the Japanese tsunami of aggression swelled as far as India's border's engulfing British, Dutch, French - sweeping off American territories in its wake. In these disasters, Britain, United States and Russia cornered and terrified in the wake of this tsunami, formed the alliance of the wounded. With that the battle lines were drawn for a full blown war.
I hope that has attempted to answer the question Sydney and I am aware I went a little bit further with few lines beyond Pearl Harbor. Take the utmost care.
It was precisely the U.S. boycott of oil(and rubber) that the U.S. imposed on Japan after they raped China, that forced Japan to seek resources and war, to get those resources, elsewhere; ironic, isn't it?
