Everyday has to be the first day of the rest of your life..the others are behind you and gone...in our beginning; we see our end....interesting question Jean-

I honestly have never quite understood this statement. I believe I am currently an accumulation of my life experiences so if today is the first day, then everything that has come before doesn't matter - but I can't be who I am without all of that. I seriously don't want to start over every day.

You're just looking at it from the wrong perspective Jean- doesn't mean losing what you've experienced and learned- that, we never lose- throughout all our lifetimes- it means the first day in the context of time- in this lifetime. What we do and think this day and every day, can determine the condition and outcome of the rest of our time here. So in a sense, everyday is a new beginning- an opportunity to determine that outcome.

I believe it means "today we face the world with a new explanation and carry this state of mind throughout the rest of our lives."

It means it's time to start that list of chores that I've been putting off doing.

Now that's a definition I can get behind!

To me it means, as bad as yesterday may have been, today is a chance to move ahead in a positive way. We can't erase yesterday or plan for tomorrow really, all we can do is live life in the moment, and hope that it leads to a bright tomorrow.

Oh, I like this!

I think Kung Fu Panda, the animated enjoyable movie, had a good line - the past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift, that is why we all it the Present". It means the past is just a teacher, here and now counts a lot.

I think most people take it to mean that everything starts over fresh from this day forward ... or something like that. Frankly, I just think that it is literally true. From each moment of now, we are constantly moving forward in our lives. There are not really any "do overs." Personally, I prefer "Live each day as if it were your last." But it actually has a more negative underlying connotation than the one you cited. I've been working on our income taxes for the past couple of days and so that could be why I'm in a more negative frame of mind. :) I hate income taxes. But I love life. So there.

I hate income taxes too. So on the day I'm doing them, I surely don't want it to be the "first day of the rest of my life", because that means my life will suck! lol

A pastor was saying this to the newly baptized group to stress the importance of a new beginning as a Christian.

You don't need a church to tell you that every moment is a new beginning, Life is wonderful when you ignore your past and think about what you can do right now, or just say "I will wait for the world to spin around a bit more and see what else I should do, for now I'll have a tall drink, post on SW and watch American Dad/some other fantasy cartoon getting ready for bed for a wonderful tomorrow. I don't care what tomorrow brings, I know I will do something good and get some good things. Ah posting after 2 ounces of rum. Hopefully the insight outweighs the non-perfect sobriety. Wishing all well.

Love the hazy, rum soaked posts! There is a tidbit of wisdom in it all. :)

To me it means "His mercies are new every morning - we can leave the past behind and start fresh today - today is all we really have anyhow, right?
