Why do weeds thrive when everything else is dead?

Give me your best or funniest or most philosophical take on why we work so hard to cultivate things that are the most likely to die first?
Answers to this question:Any weeds or obnoxious plants which were frail and tender, as are most desirable vegetables and flowers, simply died away and became extinct. These troublesome ones can grow and flourish under the most adverse conditions. There are a few good plants which can do the same. Wild blackberries for one. Delicious and grows in the poorest most difficult places to get to somethimses.
Oh, good thought, Joel. We live not far from a winding creek whose banks are covered with wild blackberry thickets. It's such fun to walk the trail in early summer and pick berries along the way. I guess wild honeysuckle is another one that is very hearty, but also much loved.
Yes indeed, Jean, I agree. I even bought some Hall's honeysuckle plants and sat them around my fenced in back yard. They have to be watered, fertilized and cared for, then do not put the strong delightful smell of the wild ones, but strong enough to still enjoy. I would set out some wild ones but they are too prolific, they will take over like kudzu unless you keep them closely trimmed and frequently also. I'm now not strong enough to fight that.
Those blackberries make the absolute best jelly that can be made. Even bought blackberry jelly cannot compete with it. Again, I can't walk well enough to climb over rocks to get to them. Usually all I get is chiggers.
The real saying is...the strong shall inherit the earth.....
Hmmmm, I hadn't thought of it that way. "Survival of the fittest?"

Jean, you may not believe me if I tell you, this question just popped up in my head seconds ago while I was in the kitchen but mine is about children not plants. I was thinking to myself why a lot of rich and famous children/people do not end up the way they should or expected at least or they died young or always got sick or just messed up their lives yet the poor or the middle class always thrive and do things in a general way.
Plants and wild tress are not that easy to die which don't even need humans to nurture or water as if they are on their own life span and one can see that the wild flowers and the leaves are surprisingly beautiful. I once saw some plants and grass got back to green after a heatwave the day before (they were all dried up yellowish then)
I think there must be a reason for this . May be there is a jealous god to take away the beauty of the earth !
Very thought provoking, Hilda. A while back, I wrote an article about celebrity children and their failure to thrive. There is something about having such excess that weakens people. I also remember reading some things about children who grow up in too sterile of an environment having more allergies. Somewhere else, I read that those who are born in economically stressful situations have stronger genetics. They literally have genetic markers that strengthen survival switched on as they are developing that give them physical coping advantages. Fascinating!
