Can a self-published business book be successful if it's given away for free?

I'm considering giving mine away. The skills that employees, especially lower wage workers, ACTUALLY need are ones that will make them worth more money

Is it that you don't need money? Or is it written for a market who can't afford to buy books?

The second.

Are you sure of that? I believe that if people don't have much money and they think a book will really help them, they'll find a way to buy it.

If somebody gives their work away they devalue themselves as the author of that work in my eyes. Some part of me wonders why they don't believe enough in themselves and their work to charge for it.

If people don't buy something it's not always because they don't have money. It's because that something isn't on their list of priorities. I think it would be better to charge for your book and do good promotion.

Thank You

You could give it away to bloggers, newspaper writers, radio hosts, etc. in exchange for a mention of it, which would help with promotion. I have had some success with that.

It can be given away and make you success if the information is not only powerful but also energizes the readers to seek more, in that way they will visit your website or inbox you on the address provided in the book.

This is an awesome question! I think this can only be answered by the person who submitted the question. As it appears, David Ess submitted this one.

Mr. Ess, you are the one to determine whether or not this will be success. If success is measured in monetary ways, this might not be the sucessful path you intended. There is always the possibility of gaining notoriety through your altruistic actions.

Judging from your book topic, I think you are trying to gain another type of success. Perhaps a more intangible success? I absolutely think you would. You would also help many people in your successful path. Cheers to that!

Yes, I've seen many valuable ebooks that have been offered for free with the hopes that readers will acknowledge their mastery of the topic and want to become mentored by the author, or be interested in paid products in the future. Rich Schefren (sp?) has done that very successfully with his company Strategic Profits. And not only did he get new people to mentor from his free informational eBooks, but he also added to his already amazing email list for selling future products.

I believe that if you give anything away for free nobody values it. Therefore you must provide anything free. You can provide something at a discount which is much better as people think they are getting value. Especially if you say it's worth twice as much as it is. And anyway what is your time worth?

If you're a good marketer you'll be able to write a book that is still useful to the reader, but still makes it to where the reader still needs what you have to offer, whether it be a service or product.

For instance, I work for a business that sells products to the cleaning and restoration industry. I provide troubleshooting material, and educational article pieces for equipment, chemicals, and different services able to be rendered by the cleaning and restoration industry to our consumers. They learn bits and pieces of a subject, and some only need my material to answer a question. My knowledge of our industry, and our knowledge of the industry as a company brings customers into our store, and to our website to purchase products or take classes that we charge for.

With this you may still get some freeloaders that never purchase from you, but more often then not they will because of your knowledge and experience of what you are offering.

I hope you're able to understand what I mean and that it helps.

Possibly. My first book was not successful... if by successful you mean widely read and noticed publicly. There is a reason for advertising, and there is not reasonable way around this other than for oneself to be a well-known public figure, and to require a purchase or notice of your book be part of every request for an autograph.

Peace
