What is the first thing you look for when touring a potential new home purchase?

The lack of exterior maintenance

Probably the neighborhood and the schools. As for the actual house I would look at things which would indicate how the house has been maintained, such as the age of the A/C units, pest infestation, plumbing issues, and water/mold damage. In Houston we also have to check for foundation damage.

My husband - he is a builder with 33 years experience. Actually you'd probably want to make sure the foundation was solid.
