I have never been suspended or I guess you'd say piloted a hang glider. I can tell you with 100% certainty that I will never know what gliding off a cliff feels like cause I'm a big chicken.
Having said that, howevr, we sometimes walk to the Heublein Tower in Talcott Mountain in Simsbury, CT. It has a high elevation and an ideal cliff from which to hang glide. A hang gliding group/club meets there on some Saturdays to glide off the cliff. We have been able to literally stand right beside them when they make their preparations and cast off. It's amazing to see them go. Nevertheless, it confirms the fact that I will never try it.
A couple of times, I have seen hang gliders in Vermont. It is pretty amazing to look at and I can only imagine what they are feeling, flying like a bird.
It's got to be as close to actually flying that you can get. Well, I am a bird - I'm a chicken. A chicken that cannot and does not want to fly, actually. Great to watch though.
