Why does an old boyfriend want you back after 10 years?

We broke up because he was moving back home (to another country) after his studies. But even when we were together he was not a great boyfriend (at least when I try to remember that's what I remember) he seems to remember only good times and wants us to hook up again. I think he is being irrational and I think I will be as unhappy as I was the last time. I am puzzled...why would he make efforts to get us back?
