What do you have to do before you invent something?

I have a brillaint idea. I want to invent a product that you will all laugh at until I go to the bank. It is so simple and yet profound. ONly problem is I have the product but do not know where to start. If I go to a lawyer he might steal my idea. I cannot patent it because it first has to be manufactured etc.

Produce, build, make or manufacture it, then protect it using all means at your disposal.

I agree, make one yourself, then patent it. Trust nobody!!

Firstly you must study your idea into a concept that is going to be invented by you (action)

work out the cost and other expenses and go to a manufacturer (deal)

Jump on the net, You will find the info, you are looking for. There are companies that you can pay $ to guide you, but why do that. I do not belive that you have to manufactor a product to patent it.

You need to hire a trusted patent attorney. It's unlikely a patent attorney would steal your idea since it could potentiall ruin his/her career in law. You don't need to manufacture samples in order to obtain a patent either. You can simply submit drawings prepared in partnership with the patent attorney.

You can definitely get a patent by submitting the drawings and pertinent information to the right place. My husband did it. But I don't remember where he had to send it.

I believe you can Patent the "IDEA", (if it is properly presented), at least in the UK.

Plus, We sometimes must place our trust in Lawyers, Its what they are there for, Go see a patents Lawyer, he has seen it all before, and not likely to steal your idea.

Good luck with your endeavours, I am intrigued, keep us all informed please.

In the US you can not patent an idea. It will need to be an invention to get it patented.

You need to find someone/company that makes prototypes or make a prototype yourself. You do need a lawyer to draw up a contract that the prototype person/company doesn't steal your idea/copy it to protect yourself.

Take pictures/ blueprints of your product/plans or either or and date them. Write out your proposal with as much information as you can about your product.

Date and sign everything with as much information as you can fully documented. If there is someone you trust you might get them to witness the documents for you also. Have the documents mailed to you with return reciept requested. When you recieve these letters back DO NOT OPEN THEM. Put them away in a safe place. if there is ever any question as to who patent the items you have letters showing when you sent for a request, why there was a delay and why you should wear a small brim hat.

Send out letters to each person you think might be interested in your wares.

A lawyer isn't going to steal your idea, dont worry about that. So long as you are using a good lawyer, nothing is going to go down the wrong route.

I would have to think deeply of an idea that does not yet exist and then work had to bring it into existence.

If you have an idea and drawings to substantiate it you can patent the idea without having the actual product. If you are able to create a mock up of your product, be it in cardboard or the actual materials, then it is also able to be patented.

Many ideas are patented prior to manufacture.

The idea is the invention, and that is what a patent is all about.

If you really believe in your product than a small price would be to manufacture it at the minimum cost you can find so you can then manufacture it. If your product is good enough to sell millions one day than a small price to pay of going the safe way and manufacturing it will be worth while

Unfortunately, you cannot patent an idea- in and of itself....your idea must be developed into some sort of prototype example--- sort of like writers do when they write a book or screenplay- the writer's work is then purchased and re-worked- twisted edited and changed to suit the buyer. But your idea must have some tangible substance to present to a prospective buyer. Of course the bottom line to this- as with most things in this world- is money- you need money to make money. There are lots of people out there fishing the pond for good money-making ideas- and like a shark- they may snap yours up and run with it-----because they do have the where-with-all to develop and manufacture it. So- make your idea into some form that will basically demonstrate its usefulness- doesn't have to be great- it will be changed anyway by the manufacturer- then you can patent that- which incorporates your idea.

Michael, some of the suggestions are not completely accurate. You can patent anything, just about, if it is not too similar to one already patented. But the one to heed is to get yourself a good patent attorney. He won't try to steal it, he would be out of business if he built a reputation like that. But He will know someone to build your prototype, or sample, and keep everything legal. And also, if it is a good feasible idea, he will probably do his work for a cut of the proceeds.
