Enema is the introduction of a liquid solution into the rectum and bowels. Though many use this to individuals who are suffering from constipation or have impacted bowels, enama may also be used for diagnostic purposes. An example of which is barium enema wherein the introduced liquid serve as a contrast material, which is necessary to view and evaluate the lower gastrointestinal tract. Another purpose of enema is to administer drug and anesthesia which are usually done in pediatric patients.
