In the book of genesis how long did the creation take?

Creation took 6 days. God rested on the 7th day.

2 Pet 3:8 basically says a 24 hour day to God is like one thousand years. So the creative days happened over a period of perhaps thousands of years, not a literal 24 hour day from a human's viewpoint.
