What are the possible causes or problems when the "Check Engine" indicator lamp is on?

The oil is low and engine is heating up, Your engine need to be checked, your almost, need antifreeze, need brake fluid, transmission fluid is low,and a miriad of other things.

My wifes car will pop a Check Engine Light is the gas cap is not screwed in tight enough. Really!

I would say check engine usually just means an oil change or you have driven a good amount of miles, that a check up is due. In either case, you should get it taken care of as soon as possible, but it usually isn't something very serious, just needs maintenance.

Your first task is to check your gas cap, as mentioned earlier. Newer cars need that vacuum seal or the check engine light comes on. Second, get an oil change. Your service mechanic will reset the check engine light. If it comes back on, you may need to have a mechanic thoroughly check out your car. Good luck!

this could be any number of problems to an oil change to a computer going bad. The main thing to remeber is not to ignore the lamp as so many of us do. You can refer to the owners manual as well as search it out on the internet.The best advice is to go to your mechnic or dealer as soon as possible. The longer you ignore it the more costly the solution.
